What is Doggo or Dragon?
Doggo or Dragon is dog training re-imagined. In fact, forget training. We are going questing.
There’s a whole world out there to explore!
In Doggo or Dragon, you play real-life relationship-powered games (RPGs) in a story-driven fantasy context.
It’s like playing a role-playing game (RPG) WITH your dog, except it’s real life…but with dragons.
Your Doggo Mentor (or DM for short) guides you through a fantastic adventure that will grow your doggo’s unique skills and abilities and fuse you two into an unbeatable party of epic heroes.
You, the hooman, will use your creativity and imagination as much as your observational skills, while your doggo companion gets to explore, puzzle solve and show off their special abilities.
Together, your party will learn spells that help you get through the difficult battles in life that are part of traveling the realms with a canine companion in your party. (Yes, you get to cast Fireball.)
You will get to know your doggo’s character, find out about their ancient archetype and special skills, and, of course, get to make a really pretty character sheet with all their stats to show off your unique, amazing doggo.
In Doggo or Dragon you are leading your party to solve puzzles, get through difficult terrain and beat the baddies, whether they’re some pesky environmental charm your doggo is vulnerable to or an evil shapeshifter disguised as a jogger.
Both you and your dog get to take initiative and influence each other’s next move. How your party progresses through the levels is determined by how you manage your companion’s (behavioral) health points and mana.
You need to keep watch for those sneaky Status Affects [sic] that can buff or debuff your doggo.
Brew mana boosting potions, wield powerful weppos, discover how to use enchanted artifacts and watch your spellbook grow thicker as you become proficient in the Ancient Laws.
Face challenges and solve puzzles together to create relationship memories that will last a life-time.
Inspired by the turn-based system you might know from your favorite RPGs, the Doggo or Dragon approach celebrates agency, communication and, most of all, the joy of having a doggo in your party.
This epic journey that began when myth and wonder still filled our world continues into our modern day.
Monsters and dragons may have become invisible to us. But what we have forgotten, our doggos remember. Doggos are old magic.
So grab your most magical hoodie and summon your familiar.
Adventure awaits!
Hi, I’m Judith and I’m passionate about helping doggos and hoomans build better relationships through the power of role-playing games.
I’m the DM (or Doggo Mentor) for Doggo or Dragon. I also share my life with two dragons.
Why RPG dog training?
Why do we train dogs? To make our lives easier? To enrich theirs? To impress others? To challenge ourselves? To give them more freedom? Stimulate their brains? Ours?
I am, for lack of a better label, a dog trainer.
And if you ask me, while all the reasons above may be true, I mostly do the thing we call dog training because it’s fun. For both me and my canine companion.
I call it playing with my dogs. Yet most of the people who seek my advice come to me because they need to solve a problem–a training problem, a behavior problem, a dog problem.
Now solving a problem isn’t what I’d say most people consider fun. We describe problems with phrases like “this has to stop” and look for solutions–to the dog problem.
We might even seek help from a professional dog problem solver, who might diagnose your problem and tell you this is a recall problem, or a reactivity problem, or a cat chasing problem.
We make a plan, get organized and put solving the dog problem on our list of things we have to do.
Is it starting to sound like fun yet? I bet you can’t wait to get home and start dog problem solving.
Thing is, I know most of us don’t think of our dogs as problems. We think of them as family members, friends, companions. And the problem often gets in the way of that.
We live with dogs because we seek joy, connection, relationship, not because we find pleasure in changing their behavior, problem or not.
You might even say we live with dogs to get away from our human problems.
Dogs, these unique beings, mysterious yet familiar, share our living room while at the same time inhabiting a world utterly alien to our own.
And maybe, if you could ask them, they might tell you about their people problems.
Did you see what I did there? I changed the language, flipped the script of the narrative we’re used to. In that one sentence I (hopefully) made you look at your dog training problem from a different perspective.
See, I believe the words we use to describe our interactions have an impact on our relationships.
The stories we tell ourselves about us and our dogs matter for the path of our journey together.
And that is the magic of role-playing games. You get to write your own story, create your own narrative, join a party of fellow adventurers from all walks of your imagination and become unlikely heroes.
You might be playing with another character from a different, yet equally made up, cultural or social background, which can help you practice empathy and understand different viewpoints in real life.
As you get to know each other, exploring the realms, playing together to overcome challenges, you improve your communication skills, learn to trust each other and rely on one another’s strengths, reinforcing your relationships.
When players collaborate and share experiences, they form bonds, which can positively influence their relationships and increase teamwork outside of the game setting.
In RPGs, communication is key. As a player, you need to learn how to clearly convey your intentions and cooperate with others.
The conversations and interactions in the fantasy environment can even be influential enough to boost your confidence and improve communication skills in real-life situations.
Truly engaging in a shared narrative of adventure is a powerful creative experience.
Players who travel the realms together, explore far flung corners of the map, solve puzzles and go on side quests until their party of heroes finally gets to face off with the boss battle form lasting memories and connections that reach far beyond this imaginary world.
And that’s exactly what inspired the relationship-powered games approach of Doggo or Dragon.
I hope to embolden you to use your imagination to reframe the way you look at sharing your life journey with your canine companion.
Forget calling it dog training. Let’s go questing!
Yes, you need to have a canine in your party to fully experience what the realms have to offer.
It helps if you believe in them. You could definitely play with one in your party if you’re brave enough. Training dragons is not for the fainthearted (ask me how I know).
This is dog training reimagined with an emphasis on imagination, agency and FUN. Both you and your doggo companion play active roles in this coop adventure.
The artwork for Doggo or Dragon was made with actual human brains and digits.
The manipulated photos you see are the result of Judith’s imagination being let loose on Procreate via an Apple pencil. Some of the original photos were taken in house (©2024 Doggo or Dragon), others were taken by talented photographers who graciously added their work to creative commons and the public domain.
The character art was born from the imagination and skill of amazing artist Felipe de Souza.
